How to Price an Electrical Job
Every electrical job has four cost buckets: the trip to get there, the time on site, the materials you install, and any permits or inspections. Price all four and add a margin, or you end up working for free on the parts you forgot to charge for.
Start with a service call (or trip) fee that covers showing up and diagnosing the problem. Add labor at your true hourly rate — not the wage you pay, but the burdened rate that covers your truck, insurance, license, and overhead. Then add materials at your cost plus a markup, and pass through permit and inspection fees at cost.
The Electrician Pricing Formula
Job Total = Service Call Fee + (Labor Hours × Hourly Rate) + (Materials Cost × (1 + Markup)) + Permit Fees
Example: a 200-amp panel upgrade with a $100 service call, 8 labor hours at $110/hour, $700 in materials at 25% markup, and a $120 permit comes to $100 + $880 + $875 + $120 = $1,975. On a job this size, collect a 50% deposit ($988) before you start.
