What you’ll get from this calculator
- Labor to hang and finish drywall typically runs $1.00–$2.70 per sq ft in 2026; hanging alone is roughly $0.30–$1.10 per sq ft.
- Installed with materials, a 4×8 sheet typically comes to $30–$70, or about $0.94–$2.19 per sq ft.
- Patch repairs: about $50–$150 for a small hole, $150–$300 for a fist-size hole and $200–$400 or more for a large one.
- Most handymen set a $150–$300 minimum; drywall contractors often set $350–$650.
How to Price a Drywall Job (5 Steps)
Use the same inputs this calculator uses, in this order:
- 1. Measure the drywall area: wall length × height for each wall, plus ceiling area. Count ceilings separately; they're slower to hang and finish.
- 2. Pick the scope: hang and finish, hang only, or finish only. Labor runs about $1.00–$2.70 per sq ft for hang + finish and $0.30–$1.10 for hanging alone.
- 3. Set the finish level. Level 4 is the standard under paint; Level 5 adds a skim coat for smooth or glossy finishes and takes noticeably longer.
- 4. Add texture and materials. Price materials at your own supplier cost plus a markup, and say whether the customer is supplying board.
- 5. Apply your minimum charge. For repairs, count the patches by size instead of measuring square feet.
The Drywall Pricing Formula
Price = (wall sq ft + ceiling sq ft × ceiling uplift) × labor rate × finish level + texture (sq ft × texture rate) + materials (sq ft × your cost × (1 + markup)), with your minimum charge as the floor.
For repairs: price = small patches × small rate + medium × medium rate + large × large rate + texture match, never less than your minimum. Minimums matter more in drywall than anywhere else, because one small patch takes three trips: patch, second coat, sand and texture.
The finish-level and ceiling multipliers are starting assumptions, not market data. Set them to match how long your crew actually takes. Every rate is editable under Advanced settings.
2026 Drywall Rates (US Contractor Pricing)

| Texture (orange peel, knockdown) | $0.50–$1.50 per sq ft |
| Small hole / nail pops | $50–$150 |
| Medium hole (fist-size) | $150–$300 |
| Large hole (6 in.+) | $200–$400+ |
| Average drywall repair (Angi, 2026) | $613 |
| Minimum charge — handyman | $150–$300 |

| Hourly — handyman | $50–$80 |
| Hourly — drywall contractor | $65–$100 |
Labor and per-sheet ranges from HomeGuide's 2026 drywall cost guide; hang-only from Constructem 2026; texture from a single 2026 contractor guide, so treat it as a rough check; repair, minimum and hourly ranges from several 2026 repair cost guides, including Angi's ($613 average). Regional swings of 20–50% are common.
Example: 1,000 Sq Ft, Hang + Finish, Level 4, Materials Supplied
| Line | Math | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Labor | 1,000 sq ft × $1.50 | $1,500 |
| Materials | 1,000 sq ft × $0.55 × 1.15 | $633 |
| Total | $2,133 | |
| Per sq ft | $2.13 |
$2.13 per sq ft installed sits inside HomeGuide's $30–$70 per sheet range ($0.94–$2.19 per sq ft). Add a Level 5 finish, texture or a lot of ceiling and the same job moves above it, which is exactly when to itemize.
