What you’ll get from this guide
- Labor to hang and finish runs $1.00–$2.70 per sq ft in 2026; hanging alone about $0.30–$1.10 per sq ft.
- Installed with materials: $30–$70 per 4×8 sheet, about $0.94–$2.19 per sq ft.
- Repairs: $50–$150 for a small hole, $150–$300 for a fist-size hole and $200–$400 or more for a large one.
- Minimums: $150–$300 for most handymen, $350–$650 for drywall contractors.
Three Ways to Price Drywall
Drywall work comes in three shapes, and each prices differently. Use the one that matches the job, and keep an hourly rate only as a check:
- Per square foot for new work: walls plus ceilings, hang, finish or both. It scales with the job and is easy to explain.
- Per sheet when the customer thinks in sheets or you're bidding against someone who does. A 4×8 sheet is 32 sq ft; a 4×12 is 48 sq ft.
- Per patch, with a minimum for repairs. Repairs are about trips and dry time, not square feet.
Drywall Price Ranges (2026, US)
| Item | Typical price |
|---|---|
| Hang + finish, labor | $1.00–$2.70 per sq ft |
| Hang only, labor | $0.30–$1.10 per sq ft |
| Installed with materials | $30–$70 per 4×8 sheet |
| Texture | $0.50–$1.50 per sq ft |
| Hourly — handyman | $50–$80 |
| Hourly — drywall contractor | $65–$100 |
HomeGuide 2026 (labor, per sheet), Constructem 2026 (hang only), a single 2026 contractor guide (texture, a rough check), and several 2026 repair guides (hourly). Regional swings of 20–50% are common.
Hang, Finish or Both: Pricing Each Stage
Hanging (cutting and screwing the board) is the fast part, at roughly $0.30–$1.10 per sq ft. Finishing (tape, three coats of mud and sanding) is where the hours go, which is why hang-and-finish labor reaches $1.00–$2.70.
If you only hang or only finish, say so on the quote, and say who supplies the board and mud. Add ceilings as their own number, because overhead work is slower at both stages.
Drywall Finish Levels Explained
| Level | What it includes | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Board hung, no tape or mud | Temporary work or where finishing is deferred |
| 1 | Tape set in mud on the joints | Above ceilings, attics, service areas |
| 2 | Tape plus one coat over joints and fasteners | Garages, under tile |
| 3 | Two coats over joints and fasteners | Under heavy texture |
| 4 | Three coats, sanded smooth | The standard under flat or eggshell paint |
| 5 | Level 4 plus a skim coat over the whole surface | Smooth walls, glossy paint, strong side light |
Each level adds labor over the one before. The calculator's level multipliers are starting assumptions; set them to how long your crew takes.
How to Price Drywall Repairs
Repairs are priced per patch, never per square foot, and always with a minimum. Even a small hole needs mud, dry time, a second coat, sanding and often a texture match, so it's usually more than one trip.
- Count holes by size: small (nail pops, under 4 in.), medium (fist-size) and large (6 in. and up).
- Charge texture matching separately. Blending orange peel or knockdown takes skill, and a visible patch is the most common complaint.
- Bundle patches into one visit, and offer touch-up paint while you're there.
